Traffic was brought to a complete standstill after a section of motorway had to be closed when two cars crashed "within minutes of each other" - with one vehicle skidding off the M61.
Emergency services had a busy day yesterday afternoon, December 8, after several crashes on the major route caused huge delays and miles of queues.
There were collisions on both carriageways between junction 8 (Chorley North Link Interchange) and junction 6 (Horwich Interchange).
