Allo ‘Allo! could have found a more stereotypically French scandal. While the British tabloids have been getting themselves in a froth over Angela Rayner crossing her legs, Coralie Dubost, 39, has apparently been quietly spending four figures on bras and pants. The most eyebrow-raising part of all this was not the amount itself - anyone who has walked into an expensive lingerie store in Paris in particular knows that prices can be surprisingly steep for such flimsy amounts of fabric - but that Dubost has allegedly been spending these sorts of sums for months in a row.

How many bras and knickers does a woman need?To be fair, Dubost’s expensive tastes run beyond just pants. But this latest election was fought during a cost of living crisis by Emmannuel Macron - a man who has been described as being the “president of the rich” - and tensions are running high across the Channel.Accusations that Macron cares more about big business than the people are coming from both sides of the political divide: the largely younger and metropolitan contingent of voters on the far left and the more rural voters on the hard right tend to agree on one thing only and it’s that Macron is there to serve the elite.
