The clothes which have defied inflation

risen at their fastest rate in 30 years with economists predicting that inflation will soon come close to 8 percent. Consumer price inflation hit 5.5 percent last month, the steepest increase since 1992.

The result? The cost of everything is being pushed up - and while rising food and energy bills are the priority concerning most of us, rising clothing and footwear prices are going to affect us all too.This seems rather gloomy until we take into account the fashion items that seem to have defied inflation over the past decade or so.

A number of competitive high street brands have managed to keep the price of its core products consistent. Take the Zara blazer: yes, the shape, cut and colours have changed to reflect shifting trends, but the price – £49.99 to £49 – is almost identical to what it was in 2010.

The same is true of Marks & Spencer’s cashmere. Telegraph Head of Fashion Lisa Armstrong recently bought a cream and lilac jumper for £99, the same price an M&S cashmere jumper cost in 2014.
