Tenancy fees now banned for all renters as new laws come into force

A new change in the law means millions more tenants will be protected from rogue landlords and letting agents. Firms will no longer be able to charge for services such as viewings, credit checks, references and gardening services, in a move that will put more power into the hands of hard-pressed renters.

The Tenant Fees Act first came into force on June 1, 2019, abolishing fees for more than five million renters in England. This included references, inventories, guarantors and credit checks which were made illegal on all contracts signed after the legislation kicked in.

However it only included those who signed an agreement after June 1 2019. Now everyone is included - and, where charges apply, your landlord will have to cover it.
