McKinley Franklin editor Rob Young, the Oscar-nominated sound mixer of “Unforgiven,” died June 11 in Albi, France from complications of a fall he sustained during a trip to Morocco. He was 76. Young was a sound mixer in the feature film industry for nearly 40 years, earning an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Sound for Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Western “Unforgiven.” He mixed sound for other popular projects including “William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet” and “Jumanji” in the mid-1990s.  Among his other notable credits were “Catwoman,” “She’s the Man,” “Final Destination 3” “Night at the Museum,” “Jennifer’s Body” and “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.”

Guns N’ Roses has blamed the BBC for poor sound quality during he band’s Glastonbury set.The ’80s rock icons took to the stage as headliners on Saturday (June 24) and delivered a mammoth 24-song setlist comprising fan favourites ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ and ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’.For some fans watching the set at home, however, the footage was rife with technical issues, in particular relating to the vocals of singer Axl Rose.Taking to social media to complain about the sound quality throughout the set, which reportedly saw the singer’s vocals dip in and out throughout the set, the issue seemed exclusive to remote viewers, with no audience members at Worthy Farm seeming to experience the same issues.“The sound Quality for #GunsNRoses at #glastonbury2023 on #BBC is absolutely horrendous, can hardly make out the Vocals or Guitar riff! Zack Sharf Digital News Director Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (“Zama”) was one of several female directors courted by Marvel Studios to direct “Black Widow,” the comic book tentpole centered on Scarlett Johansson’s assassin. Martel revealed in 2018 that she turned down the project after a meeting with Marvel in which the studio told her to focus on character and not the action scenes. In a recent interview with The Film Stage, Martel confessed she never ended up seeing “Black Widow.” “No, no, no — I didn’t see ‘Black Widow.’ I tried to,” Martel said. “They contacted a great number of female directors. I never would have imagined that Marvel could contact and bring together a pool of directors and I would be a part of it; I never thought that would be possible. I would have loved to make a film with them but I would have had to provide something that I would like to see in that world.”

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor As Emmy voting comes to a close, score mixer Phil McGowan could find himself with multiple nominations, having worked on the sound of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard,” Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” and “Ozark,” and Roku’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” He spoke with Variety about his approach to each project and what needed to be taken into consideration to preserve the sonic integrity in his mixes. “This season was bigger and more maximal than previous seasons, but there wasn’t a big sonic shift. However, each episode is like a movie. Composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson approach it like it’s another ‘Karate Kid’ film. There are guitars, a drum kit, drum machines and lots of percussion. They use a lot of samples that are reminiscent of the 1980s and ’90s. So, I have fun applying mixing techniques with reverb that blends ’80s hair metal and ’90s pop music along with big orchestral symphonic sounds on the show.”

It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard. Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse got a little enhancement for its’ run in theaters.

Ethan Shanfeld After fans reported sound mixing issues in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” Sony Pictures has sent an updated version of the film to movie theaters. The complaints were mainly targeted at low audio levels during the introductory scene in the animated Spidey sequel, which centers on Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Woman character, Gwen Stacy. While the sound issue was isolated to only a “handful of theaters,” a source close to the movie tells Variety that “all the prints” of the film have been updated, adding that it’s not entirely uncommon for distributors to send re-edited prints to exhibitors, “if the opportunity presents itself.”

Blur are set to play a free show in Madrid tonight (June 8), after their set at Primavera Sound Madrid was cancelled.The Brit-pop icons were set to perform on the first day of the Madrid edition of Primavera Sound festival, however, yesterday (June 7) it was announced that it would be cancelled due to “persistent severe weather experienced in recent weeks that have affected the pre-production of the festival.”They also added that the decision was made in light of the “adverse forecast that is expected for Thursday with heavy storms during the afternoon”. Other acts who had their sets cancelled included Yard Act, Halsey, Ghost, Le Tigre, Turnstile and more.Now, it has been confirmed that Blur will be performing another show in Madrid later today, and tickets are free for Primavera ticket holders.“Blur will play tonight at La Riviera,” the post read, confirming that doors will open at 8pm local time.

Primavera Sound Madrid 2023 has cancelled its opening day due to safety reasons amid “severe” weather.As explained in a statement posted to the festival’s social media pages, the first day (June 8) has been called off “due to the persistent severe weather experienced in recent weeks that have affected the pre-production of the festival and in view of the adverse forecast that is expected for Thursday with heavy storms during the afternoon”.“Primavera Sound Madrid continues and will open its doors in the Ciudad del Rock in Arganda del Rey on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10,” they added. “We will continue to keep you informed of any new developments through the festival’s official communication channels on the website and social networks.

The 22-year-old music extravaganza kicked off Europe’s festival season with its four-night bow in Barcelona this past weekend. Featuring multiple headliners – Blur, Halsey, Kendrick Lamar, Depeche Mode, New Order, Calvin Harris and Rosalia — on side-by-side interchanging stages, some 70,000 revelers attended daily, taking in the grounds of the city’s Parc del Forum and its myriad entertainment, activity and food options (including a full Primavera Pro conference track for industry attendees).  While at a map’s glance, it seemed as if acts on the smaller stages would drown each other out, the organizers choreographed the schedule so expertly that any conflicts didn’t feel insurmountable. It also helped that there were 317 acts to choose from, spread out over 10 stages and as many acres lining the city’s port. According to the fest, 193,000 attended Primavera’s three main days, with the largest crowd gathering for the final night where the main draw was Spain’s own Rosalia — evident from the scores of fans wearing red and black, the colors of her latest project, “Motomami.”
