The actor was a household name in the 60s and 70s thanks credits that included The Mark (1961), for which he was nominated for best actor at the Academy Awards, the Western film The Comancheros (1961), and the aviation comedy Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (1965) On television, Whitman, who was born in San Francisco, stood out in the Highway Patrol (1955–1957), Cimarron Strip (1967), and Superboy (1988–1992).
