Daily Star's biggest headlines straight to your inbox!Sri Lanka has issued new orders to protect the welfare of elephants, including banning people from riding elephants while drinking.As per the new extra gazette notification issued by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Wildlife Protection Wimalaweera Dissanayake, a series of restrictions have now been introduced.Once such restriction, barring elephant mahouts (riders) from consuming liquor “or any harmful drug” while employed.The number of people who can ride on an elephant at once has also been reduced to a maximum of four and they must sit on a well-padded saddle.There will also be an introduction of photo identity cards for captive elephants with a DNA stamp.Other measures include the restriction.
