Voters across England, including the 10 Greater Manchester boroughs, will be heading to the polls for local council elections on Thursday, May 2.
Seats are up for grabs in over 100 local authorities in England. In our region, voters will be selecting at least one councillor in each ward.
The victorious candidates in these wards will then be elected onto the council. There will also be a by-election to decide a new MP for Blackpool South on the same day, as well as 11 mayoral elections and a number of police and crime commissioner contests across the country. Initially, these elections were supposed to take place in 2020 but were postponed due to the pandemic. The political party that secures the most seats gets control of the council and influences how public services, such as schools, libraries and bin collections, are managed.
