Serial arsonist set mattress on fire as he 'couldn’t live on a tenner a day'

court has heard. Anthony Orton was living at sheltered accommodation and had his daily income capped because he was spending his benefits on cocaine and cannabis, Manchester Evening News reports.

He then set his mattress alight before fleeing from the block of flats where other vulnerable people were sleeping. Just minutes after putting a lighter to his bedding, Orton called police and told them he had started the fire “because he couldn’t live on a tenner a day”.A judge told Orton on July 19 the “selfish, attention-seeking” arson attack made him a danger to the public.“You have consistently demonstrated that you are prepared to set fire to get what you want,” Judge Tina Landale said.Orton, 32, had been living at the Premier Care Ltd.
