Scotland Yard's head of counter terrorism policing has hailed those who assisted victims of an attack in Reading "heroes". Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu spoke out this evening saying that the heroic actions of the public inspired others to "step forward and play our part".

Mr Basu spoke out days after Joe Ritchie-Bennett, 39, James Furlong, 36, and David Wails, were stabbed to death by a lone attacker while having drinks in the sunshine in Forbury Gardens in the town centre just before 7pm on Saturday.

Khairi Saadallah, a 25-year-old man who lived in a flat in Reading and was a refugee of the civil war in Libya, was arrested near the scene on Saturday and remains in custody.
