Grand National winner Tiger Roll will not be in the running to match the legendary Red Rum's record at Aintree, the stud's owner has confirmed. The horse became a household name with back-to-back victories at the National in 2018 and 2019, and was tipped to go on to match the record of three successes. But the race was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, while Tiger Roll did not race last year after being given a rating of 166 – far higher than the 150 score he was given in 2018 when he was younger and stronger. The handicapper for this year's race has decided it would be appropriate for him to carry 11st 4lb this year, more than the 10st 13lb he won with in 2018.That decision has been blasted as "absurd" by owner Michael O'Leary, who has announced Tiger Roll will not race at Aintree due to concerns over his welfare. "Tiger Roll is now 12 years old," he told the Racing Post. "He is clearly not as good as he was at eight or nine, and yet the UK handicapper now rates him 2lbs higher than his 159 rating in April 2019, when he won both the Boyne Hurdle and the Aintree Grand National. "This rating is absurd, and unfair on a 12-year-old chaser.
