Rugby league is uniting but top flight still needs independence says Wolves boss

Warrington chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick says the coronavirus lockdown has brought Super League and the RFL back together - but insists the top flight still needs its own organisation.

Super League clubs forced a separation from the sport’s governing body in 2018 to take control of their commercial affairs in a messy split labelled a “civil war”.

Leeds boss Gary Hetherington was the one dissenting top flight voice before the formation of a new commercially-focused body led by executive chairman Robert Elstone.

The need for that has now been questioned - including by some who helped force the split - after the RFL secured a £16million emergency government loan last week to ensure the sport’s short-term survival.
