England Academy coach Dave Elliott has revealed how the country’s leading young players are still being moulded for the top - despite missing out on a crucial tour Down Under.
Eighteen months ago Elliott’s side - including Morgan Smithies, Harry Newman and Jack Welsby - beat the lauded Australian Schoolboys 2-0 on home soil.
The trio - now too old for the academy - have since become Super League regulars as part of a system that continues to produce some of the best players in the world.
The Class of 2020 will not get the chance to test themselves against Australia and New Zealand’s elite amid the coronavirus pandemic - but Elliott says their development must continue.
