Ricky Gervais was struck down by a painful illness but thankfully lived to tell the tale. The comedian, 61, said he woke up at around 1am in the morning with a shooting pain in his side that was so intense he was convinced he had cancer.
Thankfully, it was nothing of the sort, and The Office star was ready for a beer the very next day. The A-lister explained this week: ‘What happened was, it was Wednesday night, about 1am, and I had a pain in my side that woke me up – like a shooting pain. ‘It was like “Aaaaah,” that never happens. ’He added, according to the Sun: ‘My first thought was obviously – liver cancer, right?
In the middle of the night, you’re convinced — that is it. I’ve blown it. ’Ricky continued: ‘I got another pain, and it was, “Oh, oh God. ” And I felt sick. ’The award-winning writer then explained that despite feeling queasy, he was unable to vomit as ‘nothing was there’, but called the pain he experienced when retching ‘incredible’. ‘You forget how bad vomiting is – you forget just how f*****g awful,’ he pointed out, adding: ‘I mean, never mind the illness and thinking you’re going to die – I can’t breathe.
And I think I’m going to choke. ‘I think I’m not going to get my breath back in between each spasm. ’It’s not the first time this month that Ricky has gone into grim detail about his toilet visits.
