The coin was sold for more than 5,000 times its face value and is one of a batch that entered into circulation back in 2005.It was created to mark 250 years of the Samuel Johnson's Dictionary, and on the back of the coin are snippets from dictionary entries for the words "fifty" and "pence".The coin sold back in June 2020 and the Bromley listed advert received two bids before the auction ended – £1.64 postage not included.The 50p coin was listed as "extremely rare" but some experts reckon it might not be as uncommon as the seller has made out.Changechecker ranks the coin as "common" on its scarcity index, while Coin Hunter estimates that it is only normally worth around.
