Vladimir Putin has been humiliated after a kidnapped Ukrainian mayor has been freed from Russian soldiers. Melitopol mayor Ivan Fedorov was reportedly abducted by Putin's forces in their siege of the city as Russia wages war on Ukraine.

Mr Fedorov was apparently filmed with a sack pulled over his head and marched across a square in the city centre. Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky described the shocking abduction of a politician as a "new stage of terror" deployed by Moscow. But according to Kyrylo Tymoshenko who is the deputy head of the office of the Ukraine president, a special mission to rescue Mr Fedorov has succeeded. The announcement came as a huge relief to Mr Zelensky yesterday (Wednesday, March 16), who was heard saying to his fellow countryman: "It's great to hear the voice of a living guy."Mr Tymoshenko confirmed the victory which will no doubt come as an embarrassing blow to Putin, on Telegram. He said: "A special operation to free Melitopol mayor Ivan Fedorov has now been effectively accomplished."Following his nightmare hostage situation, Mr Fedorov is expected to return to work as Melitopol's main man.

Ukrainian officials shared an emotional video on social media of Mr Zelensky chatting to Mr Fedorov over the phone.Mr Fedorov eagerly expressed his gratitude for the special operation deployed to rescue him saying thanks for "not abandoning me".He added that he will be dedicated to Ukraine's resistance effort, promising he will only need "One or two days to recover and then I'll be at your command to contribute to our victory."The southeastern city of Melitopol was one of the first cities to surrender to the Kremlin's militant invasion.
