Premier League players wearing masks during matches would be 'sensible', says doctor

A doctor has said that it would be a “sensible precaution” for players to wear face masks during matches and training. The Premier League has been postponed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic with a return not likely before the second half of May at the earliest.

Premier League chiefs are eager for the season to be completed though insist action will only return when it is safe to do so.

And an epidemiologist believes that protective masks for the players may be an idea for sports administrators to consider. “Masks tend not to protect you but protect others,” Dr Rowland Kao from the University of Edinburgh said. “They prevent aerosol spray but leaves open (the risk of) fomite transmission – putting your hand to your mouth or
