Police have issued more than 1,000 fines for people breaking lockdown rules

A total of 1,084 fines have been dished out by police forces in England and Wales to people caught flouting lockdown restrictions.

Martin Hewitt, head of the National Police Chief's Council, said fines had been issued across 37 different forces to a “small minority of people” failing to follow the Government’s guidance.

This is an average of less than 84 fines a day, reports Birmingham Live. Speaking on Thursday, he said: “This shows that the overwhelming majority of people are abiding by the rules and are staying at home to protect the NHS and save lives.
