Netflix to end Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Sandman’ with season two
The Sandman will end with the upcoming season two.The screen adaptation of Gaiman’s influential graphic novel first debuted on Netflix in August 2022 and was renewed for a second season later that year. There were talks of even more seasons, even before the first one premiered, with showrunner Allan Heinberg telling NME at the show’s London premiere that they wanted to adapt the entirety of the comic book series in future seasons. Now though, it’s been reported that the show’s yet-to-be-released second season will be its last. Per Variety, Heinberg has confirmed the show was set to end at this point prior to filming beginning. He told the publication: “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”Heinberg continued: “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”The release plan for the upcoming season will not be impacted by the cancellation, and will still be released this year.It follows the news that Dark Horse Comics, the American publisher that oversaw several of Gaiman’s fantasy titles, including American Gods and Norse Mythology, have cut ties with him and cancelled all upcoming collaborations.“Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works,” they wrote in a statement in January.

‘Final Destination 6’ confirmed for summer 2025 release
Final Destination series is confirmed for a 2025 release.Per Variety, Final Destination: Bloodlines will arrive in cinemas on May 16, 2025 – 14 years after the release of its previous instalment, Final Destination 5.The film will be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, who were responsible for the 2018 indie thriller Freaks. No plot details have been made available yet.The Final Destination franchise usually features a new cast of characters in each film, with the commonality of a looming, unseen threat that causes their gruesome deaths – its teen protagonists are haunted by premonitions of such deaths, and these films usually chart their often perilous journey to prevent these disasters from happening. In 2022, Lipovsky and Stein spoke about their ambitious pitch to the franchise’s producers, which involved faking their own deaths during a Zoom call. The pair got the job after what was called “the Zoom call to end all Zoom calls”, describing an incident in which the pair took the meeting with a burning fireplace behind them. The publication explains that once the meeting finished, the mantel behind Lipovsky and Stein began to burn, before the pair extinguished the flames. But then tragedy seemed to strike as attendees on the call heard a creak, after which a ceiling fan broke loose from the ceiling and decapitated one of the filmmakers.

Cate Blanchett on Camerimage Film Festival’s sexism controversy: “The work is never done”
Cate Blanchett has commented on the sexism allegations lobbied against the Camerimage Film Festival – see what she had to say below.Last week (November 12), the Camerimage Film Festival found itself in controversy after its director Marek Żydowicz penned about female filmmakers that led to claims of misogyny.Per Variety, Żydowicz appeared to suggest that more female cinematographers and directors being showcased in film festival programming could lead to the inclusion of “mediocre film productions” at the expense of “works and artists with outstanding artistic achievements.”He wrote: “Should we reject what is esteemed and valuable just to ‘make space’ for the necessity of social change? Whilst festivals like Cannes, Berlin or Venice are criticized for their selections due to succumbing to or promoting [political or ideological trends], Camerimage remains committed to artistic values as the foremost criterion for qualifying and promoting film art.”Blanchett – who will serve as the festival’s competition jury president for 2024 – has since confirmed that she will still attend the event and fulfil her duties, but in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter expanded on the controversy. Now, she’s said to THR: “As Anna Higgs, who is also on the jury with me, put it: ‘The work is never done.’ Festivals are an opportunity to unpack that stuff and to have meaningful conversations. Festivals provide a chance to do this in a public-facing way but also privately because they bring us together as an industry.

‘The Substance’ withdrawn from film festival after festival director’s “highly misogynistic” comments about female filmmakers
The Substance director Coralie Fargeat has pulled her film from the Camerimage Film Festival – find out more below.Last week (November 12), the Camerimage Film Festival found itself in controversy after its director Marek Żydowicz penned a column for Cinematography World magazine that led to claims of misogyny.Per Variety, Żydowicz appeared to suggest that more female cinematographers and directors being showcased in film festival programming could lead to the inclusion of “mediocre film productions” at the expense of “works and artists with outstanding artistic achievements.”He wrote: “Should we reject what is esteemed and valuable just to ‘make space’ for the necessity of social change? Whilst festivals like Cannes, Berlin or Venice are criticized for their selections due to succumbing to or promoting [political or ideological trends], Camerimage remains committed to artistic values as the foremost criterion for qualifying and promoting film art.”Żydowicz has since claimed that his column was misunderstood: “We have always strived to showcase only the best of contemporary cinema, regardless of who creates it. And that is how my statement should be understood, there is nothing more to it, it has nothing to do with lack of respect for women.”On Saturday (November 16), Fargeat announced that she has decided to pull The Substance from the film festival following Żydowicz’s comments: “After discovering teh highly misogynistic and offensive words of the director of the Camerimage Film Festival, I have decided to pull THE SUBSTANCE from the festival (and [director of photography] Benjamin Kračun has decided not to attend.”She continued: “The Substance is about the impact of exactly these types of behaviours on our world.
