Dawn French hits back after podcast host told her to “catch up” on trans issues

The Vicar Of Dibley star shared her thoughts on what she perceives as society’s quickness to cancel people, saying “we are expected to present ourselves as perfect”.This follows French being told to “catch up” in a conversation surrounding JK Rowling’s controversial comments about the trans community.Speaking recently on the Happy Place podcast with Fearne Cotton, French began: “We’re all talking about inclusivity and favouring difference and all the rest of it. And that’s all great, I love the idea of that, but that’s not how we’re living.”She explained: “We’re living the opposite of that – we’re massively intolerant, quick to blame, litigation, bullying and trolling and all of this dreadful stuff which has got nothing to do with understanding how other human beings operate.”French continued: “We are people who know we make mistakes, we know we have shortcomings, we know all this stuff but because we are expected to present ourselves as perfect and only celebrate all the perfect things, it’s just wiped out any margin for error. The British comedian also spoke about the need for “robust debate” and a greater understanding between people.

Dawn French says she didn’t like “posh” Jennifer Saunders when they first met
Since the final episode of the show, the duo have worked together on various ventures. Some of their joint projects were a podcast and a radio programme.Dawn has previously spoken out on her friendship with Jennifer and how she was "conflicted" with jealousy when Jennifer’s sitcom Absolutely Fabulous gained success. The legendary duo had been set to make another series of French and Saunders in 1991, but Dawn and her then-husband Lenny Henry adopted their daughter Billie, and Dawn was unable to film.So Jennifer used the studio they had booked to try out her new show with Joanna Lumley instead. However, Dawn was a sounding board for ideas alongside US comedian Ruby Wax, 68, before the launch of Absolutely Fabulous.Speaking on Rylan Clark's Ry-Union podcast last year, Dawn explained: "When Jennifer got her scripts ready she used to pass them by me, and sometimes she used to pass them by Ruby."Ruby was definitely involved [in Ab Fab], and Jennifer really relied on Ruby as time went on."I did a few little bits in the show, obviously, and if she asked me to look at anything I would do that...but then she got confident with it and off she went."I got very conflicted about her massive success with Ab Fab. You know when your sister does really well at something? You're like, 'Oh good for you, good for you...

Review: Death on the Nile is a slow boat
Death on the Nile (★★☆☆☆) miscalculates from the start, marching into a mystery Christie herself showed no interest in exploring: the origins of Hercule Poirot’s trademark mustache.Director and star Kenneth Branagh, helming his second Christie adaptation following the 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, digs into a black-and-white, WWI-set prologue that firmly establishes Belgian sleuth Poirot as the film’s romantic hero.Christie’s sturdy plots and colorful characters certainly invite inventive reinterpretation, but it feels misguided making this or any Poirot story more about the man solving the mystery, than about the mystery that Poirot must solve. The sprightlier 1978 version of Death on the Nile, directed by John Guillermin and scripted by Sleuth playwright Anthony Shaffer, struck a more satisfying balance between the famous detective and the cast of suspects all harboring motives for murder. That whodunnit boasted a lineup of eccentric legends — Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith, David Niven, and, of course, Peter Ustinov as Poirot — inhabiting Dame Agatha’s larger-than-life characters while swooning about in Anthony Powell’s Oscar-winning ’30s-era costumes. The result was gloriously camp, as much as it was wickedly intriguing.

Inside Emmerdale Ellis star's life - rival soap role, race row and co-star romance
Emmerdale fans were devastated this week, after Ellis Chapman decided to leave the village for Australia. Both viewers and the characters on screen were left in tears, as Ellis got a surprise visit from former flame Priya Sharma while waiting for a taxi to the airport. She later told him: "You know I love you, don't you?" to which Ellis replied: "I love you, I always did," before departing for good.Ellis Chapman's departure from Emmerdale follows allegations of a race probe about two of its stars, which reportedly left actor Aaron furious and led to his decision to quit the soap.Although Aaron may be leaving Emmerdale, it is certain it will not be the last time we see him, having already achieved huge success in his career opposite some famous names of stage and screen.Aaron graduated from the Bristol Old Vic in 2013, and, since then, the talented actor has not left our screens or theatre stages. However a few years before he landed his famous Emmerdale role, he also starred in another rival soap. From 2017 to 2018, he played Nathan Westwood in BBC daytime soap Doctors, alongside appearances in other popular TV programmes including Holby City and Hidden. His first acting role actually came when he was just six years old, when he starred in Midsomer Murders in 1997.He later went on to star in the crime drama once again in 2019, for one episode as Cal Ingallas.Aaron also received critical acclaim for his role as Adam Hesketh in Delicious, opposite Dawn French and Emilia Fox, as well as his role as Ian in the Netflix series Behind Her Eyes in 2021.Aaron Anthony joined Emmerdale in 2019 after former Ellis Chapman star Asan N'Jie was fired by soap bosses, following a confrontation with Hollyoaks star Jamie Lomas at the TV Choice
