The 76th British Academy Film Awards will take place tonight, as stars of film from around the world descend on London to celebrate the best achievements in filmmaking from the past year. The nominations were announced by Captain America actress Hayley Atwell and Ted Lasso’s Toheeb Jimoh via a live broadcast from London on January 19.

Guild award season got serious Saturday night as the Directors Guild of America handed out its annual honors for directorial achievement. With a potential work stoppage in the months ahead, the 2023 DGA Awards were a moment of requisite celebration for the nominees, winners, and guild overall.

In TV, “Severance,” “Station Eleven” and “The Daily Show” were among the frontrunners (with two nods each), while Steven Spielberg was gunning for his fourth trophy, for the semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans.” But also in the hunt are Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the duo behind the sci-fi comedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” At the DGA, Spielberg holds the record for the most nominations and wins, at 13 and three, respectively. The DGA boasts a voting body of around 19,000 members. Over its 75-year history, the DGA Awards has been the most reliable barometer for the Oscars’ best director prize. Only eight DGA winners have failed to walk away with the Academy Award, most recently Sam Mendes (“1917”), who lost to Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) in 2020.

Michelle Yeoh revealed that Jackie Chan was originally offered her part in Everything Everywhere All At Once.In a recent interview with CNN, the 60-year-old performer recalled the congratulatory text she received from Chan, 68, after she took the role. She recalled that, when the Rush Hour franchise star turned down the role due to prior work commitments, the part was rewritten for her.Yeoh stated: 'I remember Jackie texting me and saying, "Congratulations! You know your boys came to see me first." I'm like, "Thank you bro, you did me a huge favor."'The actress - who was recently honored at the Critics' Circle Film Awards - has been nominated for the Best Actress award at the upcoming Oscars.

It means the modest streak of women winning the Directing Oscar will end at two, after back-to-back wins the past two years with Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) in 2022 and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) in 2021.

The film also drew noms for costume, original score, original screenplay, best original song, film editing, and directing for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

Judd Apatow has signed on to host the 2023 DGA Awards set to take place February 18 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. It will be his fourth timing hosting the annual awards show after taking the stage in 2018, 2020 and 2022.'I am so honored to host the DGA awards for the fourth time.
