Flight lieutenant Brian Latham, 96, had been reprimanded for a slight misdemeanour. Nevertheless on VE Day he was allowed out to celebrate On VE Day I was under open arrest at RAF Shobdon in Herefordshire, but they still sent me up flying every day, so it can’t have been that serious.

As a young glider pilot recently returned from Operation Varsity – the massive airborne assault over the Rhine in March 1945 – it wasn’t a position I expected to be in.

But on arriving back in Britain after the operation I had written a letter to my cousin in Dublin that had been picked up by the censors for apparently giving too much away.
