Mike Ashley has been outed by his staff for “secretly” sending some staff back to work while they were on furlough. Sports Direct and House of Fraser chains both asked store managers to work at least once a week, which could be a breach of the government scheme.
Two managers said they had been told not to clock on when they worked in stores. The staff had also been asked to return to work on 90% pay yesterday but Ashley was forced to perform a U-turn after the plans were made public.
The government's furlough scheme states: "To be eligible for the grant, when on furlough, an employee cannot undertake work for, or on behalf, of the organisation or any linked or associated organisation. "This includes providing services or generating revenue.
