Michael Owen has rebuffed previous claims from legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he wasn’t given enough protection during his early days at Liverpool.
Owen burst onto the scene at Anfield as a 17-year-old, finishing as joint top scorer in his first full season in senior football.
But the England hero ended up retiring at just 33 after a career that turned out to be riddled by injuries. Owen made more than 300 appearances by the time he left Liverpool for Real Madrid after seven seasons.
And Old Trafford icon Ferguson, who coached Owen later in his career, has previously stated that he thinks Liverpool were too reliant on the frontman during his early days.
