United confirmed on Thursday that Carney would be one of eight players released by the club after their contracts expired. However, he wasn't without a club for long as League One outfit Sunderland decided to sign the 20-year-old on a two-year contract, with an option of a further year, a move that Carney admitted he was delighted with. "I’ve heard really good things about Lee Johnson, Lee Butler and Mark Prudhoe, but I’m also looking forward to working with Lee Burge and Anthony Patterson", Carney told Sunderland's website.
