The 2010s was not a vintage decade for the Manchester United academy as far as silverware was concerned. They peaked with the Class of 2011's FA Youth Cup success, there was a semi-final appearance in 2012 and thereafter, save for Mason Greenwood's magnificent hat-trick in that uplifting defeat of Chelsea, it was largely forgettable.
For an inordinate period, the academy was neglected and jointly run by the former club secretary John Alexander, there was an infamous 12-match losing streak in 2015-16, and a 5-1 Youth Cup shellacking in the same season.
The flip-side is 41 academy graduates played for the first-team. Silverware is everything at senior level for United but not in the juniors.
