At the Labour group’s annual general meeting, which spanned Sunday and Monday evenings, newly-elected Hulme member Ekua Bayunu formally ran against Sir Richard, whose position can technically be challenged every year - but virtually never is.
Coun Bayunu told colleagues that, particularly after the experience of the pandemic, she and other female and ethnic minority members were now well placed to shape the city’s future ‘alongside the white men who’ve carried the burden of power for decades’.
