On an August night eight years ago, the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony rounded off an extraordinary fortnight in London. A £20million music festival marked the end of a Games that had brought together a country and showcased the best of Britain.
Now, it would be all about legacy. As the glossy Olympic bid brochure stated: “The most enduring legacy of the Olympics will be the regeneration of an entire community for the direct benefit of everyone who lives there.” Legacy, Sebastian Coe added, “is probably nine-tenths of what this process is about, not just 16 days of Olympic sport.” These were promises not just made to a community, but to the world.
