Henry Cavill is set to star in a live-action Voltron film for Amazon Studios.The forthcoming movie will be an adaptation of the American animated TV franchise, which itself was originally adapted from several Japanese anime series by Toei Animation.Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but the main concept of the franchise centres around a team of space explorers who pilot a giant super robot.Cavill will join previously announced star Daniel Quinn-Toye, a film newcomer who appeared on the TV series Badults and served as Tom Holland’s understudy in Romeo & Juliet on the West End this earlier this year.The film will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously helmed the 2021 Netflix action film Red Notice, starring Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson, and 2018’s Skyscraper, which also starred Johnson.Cavill most recently made a cameo appearance as the Wolverine variant “Cavillrine” in Marvel‘s Deadpool and Wolverine. His other 2024 credits include Matthew Vaughan’s spy comedy Argylle and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.The actor is next set to star in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot and Ritchie’s action adventure film In The Grey.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief “One Piece,” the long running and iconic Japanese animation series, is to take a six-month hiatus, effective immediately. Toei Animation, the company behind the show, said that the series will take a break after Sunday’s Episode 1122 and return in April 2025 with fresh episodes from the “Egghead Arc.” No explanation for the abrupt break was offered in a written press statement, but at an online event, it was explained that the creators need to “recharge” themselves. Having run for 25 years since its Japanese TV debut in 1999, the “One Piece” animated series is produced by Toei Animation and airs weekly.

Chainsaw Man, Berzerk, Mieruko-Chan and the Junji Ito Collection can be streamed free-with-ads, through Crunchyroll.Other anime series being rolled out include Devil May Cry, Angels Of Death, Attack On Titan and Hell’s Paradise.Meanwhile, the trailer for the new Attack On Titan film recently dropped.Entitled Attack On Titan The Movie: The Last Attack, it is set to be made up of the show’s two final chapters from the concluding season.The new movie is set to debut in Japan on November 8. Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Brussels-based sales agency Be For Films has closed distribution deals on Frédéric Farrucci‘s “The Mohican,” which world premiered in the Horizons Extra section of the Venice Film Festival. Territories deals closed include Frenetic Films for Switzerland, Splendid Film for Germany and Austria, Edge Entertainment for Scandinavia, One From the Heart for Greece, and Imovision for Brazil. The company is in discussion for deals for Benelux, Australia, U.S.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Netflix is launching a local adaptation of “Love Is Blind” in Italy following recent European redos of the hit reality dating show in the U.K. and Sweden. “Love Is Blind Italy,” which is being produced for Netflix by Banijay Italia, “has begun casting and is now open for Italian residents,” said a Netflix statement that did not reveal when the streaming giant plans to air the show’s Italian iteration.

TWICE‘s Japanese sub-unit MISAMO have released a remake of Namie Amuro’s 2008 track ‘New Look’ in the lead-up to their second mini-album, ‘Haute Couture’.The music video for ‘New Look’ features MISAMO’s Mina, Momo and Sana in a cinematic music video that blends nostalgic motifs and present-day themes in their visual that pays homage to fashion icon Twiggy, an English model best known for her prominence in the fashion world in the ’60s.“Just like Twiggy in cinema, I’ll wear a mini-skirt, / Short hair so I can look like a tomboy / But I wanna get a new look / The fashion that goes well with this character / Just like that cover girl, yeah,” they harmonise on the chorus.‘New Look’ marks the first preview of MISAMO’s upcoming sophomore mini-album, ‘Haute Couture’, due out on November 6. According to TWICE’s Japanese website, the record is set to include seven tracks in total, including ‘New Look’.‘Haute Couture’ will come over a year since they made their debut in July 2023 with ‘Masterpiece’, which featured the hit song ‘Do Not Touch’.

K-pop music on a global scale have seen a jump of over 300 per cent in the last five years, according to new Spotify data.According to Spotify data cited by Yonhap News Agency, streams of K-pop music have surged 362 per cent in the global market over the past five years. The largest increase was recorded in Southeast Asia, with a 423 per cent jump, while the US recorded a 182 per cent rise.However, the US has emerged as the country with the most K-pop listeners.

Naman Ramachandran Philippines-based Fire and Ice Media has sold Asia Pacific rights for Donie Ordiales’ “Crosspoint” to Netflix. The deal was struck at the recently-concluded Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), adjacent to the Busan International Film Festival. The film stars award-winning Philippines actor Carlo Aquino (“Whispers in the Wind”) and Japan’s Hira Takehiro, Emmy nominated for his performance in “Shogun.” It follows Manuel Hidalgo (Aquino), once a famous Filipino actor, who moves to Japan after a career slump to survive by performing illegally in Filipino pubs.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief GrX Studio has set its sights on an international expansion that matches its leading position within Taiwan’s film and TV production industry. At a fast-paced event on Monday held on the margins of the Busan International Film Festival, the company detailed plans to invest some $45 million over five years into 15 Mandarin-language series and five horror films through a new fund. The launch event also included a roster of current shows from the group, which was formerly known as Greener Grass Productions. It was previously responsible for “Copycat Killer,” a series which has performed strongly for streaming giant Netflix. Taiwan actor Ning Chang and Vietnam actor Lien Binh Phat from “The Outlaw Doctor,” a crime series which is now in post-production and which GrX co-produced with Public Television Service Foundation (PTS) and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), and Korean celebrity Jinyoung and Taiwan actress Moon Lee from “The Photo from 1977.” The title is a romance film facilitated by the Hakka Affairs Council, with script development supported by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and is part-funded by the Hakka Public Communication Foundation. Other titles confirmed at the event included: a horror film “Trapped in Yellow”; a boys’ love (BL) feature film “Wild With You,” produced by Golden Bell Awards-winning producer Phoebe Ma; and the thriller series “The Ones I Killed and the Ones Who Killed Me,” that is currently in development and is adapted from the popular Japanese novel by Akira Higashiyama. An historical series set in Taiwan and Japan, titled “KOHAKU: The Traitor of the Night,” is to be directed by Lien Yi-chi and Kentaro Hagiwara.
