Scowl have shared their fierce new single ‘Special’, marking their first release under their new label home Dead Oceans.Produced by Grammy-nominated Will Yip –who also worked on the band’s EP Psychic Dance Routine – and mixed by Rich Costey (Fiona Apple, Deftones, Vampire Weekend) ‘Special’ sees frontwoman Kat Moss sing “Caught running away again / Thought by now I’d figured out / The hell of my undoing / It’s desperation to feel alive” over pounding drums and explosive guitar riffs, questioning what she really wants.Speaking about the track in a press release, Moss shared: “Originally Malachi [Greene, guitarist] sent in the demo while we were touring the UK. Cole [Glibert] added his flare on drums, Bailey [Lupo, bassist] directed the bridge, and finally Mikey [Bifolco, bassist] cooked up his leads.

Scowl are gathered backstage at The Fillmore in Charlotte, North Carolina, the latest in a dizzying array of shows that have propelled the band from performances at unlikely venues like a Sonic Drive-In to 2000-cap rooms. Kat Moss, the frontwoman for the Bay Area hardcore band, stands out from her bandmates with her shock of neon green hair. She is joined by the rest of the band, guitarists Malachi Greene and Mikey Bifolco, bassist Bailey Lupo, and drummer Cole Gilbert, who squeeze in tightly on the green room couch.

Scowl, Speed and Zulu have become the latest bands to pull out of Download 2024 over its partnership with Barclays and the bank’s ties to Israel.The news follows a similar move from Leeds hardcore band Pest Control who announced they would be pulling out earlier today (June 10), saying that they would not “take part in an event whose sponsor profits from facilitating a genocide.”In a statement posted to their social media, Scowl wrote: “We will not be playing Download fest this year due to Barclays Bank sponsorship of the event and Barclays’ connection to Israel and the genocide Israel is committing in Palestine.“Free Palestine!”They directed fans to the Bands Boycott Barclays campaign for more information and thanked Pest Control “for bringing this to our attention”.Meanwhile, Speed wrote on their social media accounts: “SPEED will no longer be playing Download Festival this Friday June 14 due to the recent news of Barclays Banks sponsorship of the event and their involvement in the war in Gaza.”Zulu announced they would be dropping out shortly after. In their statement, they said: “We will not be playing Download Festival as we just got word about Barclays Bank and their sponsorship of the fest.

Scowl have announced that they have pulled out of Welcome To Rockville Festival next month, due to the US Army’s sponsorship of the event.The Californian hardcore band confirmed the news on their social media accounts yesterday (April 2).“We will not be performing at this year’s Welcome To Rockville Festival in Daytona Beach, FL due to the US Army’s Sponsorship of the event,” the band wrote in a post on X.The hard rock and metal festival, which is taking place in Daytona Beach, Florida from May 9-12 this year, has its full list of commercial partners listed here, including the US Army.We will not be performing at this year'sWelcome To Rockville Festival in Daytona Beach, FL due to the US Army’s Sponsorship of the event.— SCOWL (@Scowl40831) April 2, 2024NME has contacted Welcome To Rockville for a response to Scowl’s decision.This year’s edition of the festival is set to be headlined by Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Motley Crue and Limp Bizkit. Joining them on the bill are acts including Judas Priest, Greta Van Fleet, Queens of the Stone Age, Sum 41, Disturbed, Primus and Anthrax.Scowl were one of the first bands to similarly withdraw from SXSW last month for the same sponsorship connection with the US Army.At the time, the band wrote: “Scowl is no longer performing at any of our previously scheduled ‘official’ SXSW showcases.“We came to this decision in protest of the US Army’s sponsorship of SXSW.

Scowl and Gel have become the latest bands to pull out of SXSW over the event’s ties to the US Army amid the current Israel-Hamas conflict.The festival will take place in Austin, Texas from March 12-14 but has already seen numerous artists who have pledged their support to Palestine pull out because the US Army sponsors the event. Eliza McLamb, Okay Shalom and Squirrelflower have all dropped off the line-up, the latter of whom also pointed to the festival’s ties to the defense contractor RTX Corporation, which has supplied weapons to Israel.Now, two more bands have also announced that they are pulling out.

Scowl‘s Kat Moss has responded to the “industry plant” criticism the band have gotten by asking: “Is our success never valid enough for you?”The frontwoman of the California hardcore band took to X/Twitter to voice her feelings on the constant criticism Scowl faces. Quoting Bikini Kill’s track ‘White Boy’, the vocalist tweeted: “I’m so sorry if I’m alienating some of you, your whole fucking culture alienates me!”She proceeded to share a statement that read: “I am sick of hearing the phrase ‘Industry plant’ every single time Scowl experiences success.
