Set in La Paz, Bolivia, it stars Alfredo Castro (“El Conde”) as a lonely tailor, Señor Novoa, whose dog is stolen by a 15-year-old shoe shiner who imagines Sr.

Two British girls, including a baby, have been rescued after being discovered "abandoned" in a vehicle on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Local police in Arona reported that the children were found after a passer-by spotted a white Volkswagen Polo rental car parked in direct sunlight in Las Galletas, which is just an hour from where authorities are searching for missing British teenager Jay Slater.

Holly Jones Standout Paris-based sales outfit Luxbox (“1976”) has acquired international sales rights to the debut solo feature effort from Chilean multi-hyphenate Vinko Tomičić Salinas(“Durmiente”),“The Dog Thief” (“El Ladrón de Perros”), which bows in the international narrative competition at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, running June 5-16. Holly Jones Far-out cineaste Santiago Mohar Volkow (“Los Muertos”) will deliver his fourth feature “A History of Love & War” (“Una Historia de Amor y de Guerra”) to audiences at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. A viscally ludicrous examination of Mexico’s colonial history and the duplicitous nature of high-wealth, the film screens as part of the Harbor strand, dedicated to a wide range of contemporary narratives.

Shakira has always expressed her pride for her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, and has brought great joy to her fellow Colombians. In a heartwarming gesture, the city has honored her with a 21.3-foot (6.50-meter) bronze statue. During a special ceremony, the sculpture was unveiled on December 26th in the presence of Shakira’s parents, Mr. William Mebarak and Mrs. Nidia Ripoll.

Shakira is getting a monument in her hometown. Built in partnership with Barranquilla’s mayor’s office, Shakira’s statue is made out of bronze and will measure about 20 feet high. The statue is currently under construction and is expected to weigh between three to four tons.

There is so much to appreciate about A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One. The film chronicles the lives of native New Yorkers from 1994-2005, which was a period of transition in NYC. The atmosphere began to change, as stop and frisk was over-utilized, gentrification was displacing the people of Harlem at rapid speed, and the culture of the city gave way to sterilization. Now there are even fewer resources available, the wage gap is beyond repair and it’s unaffordable. Rockwell drew inspiration from this and created a coming-of-age story about finding an identity and chosen family.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic You’ve heard the expression, “There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.” Well, “The Grab” makes the case that society had best brace itself for disorder, since certain parties are gobbling up the world’s food and water resources while the rest of us are distracted by other things. Produced in association with the Center for Investigative Reporting, “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s astonishing, eye-opening doc hits us with the idea that the next world war won’t be fought over ideology, oil or border disputes, but basic resources like meat, wheat and water, none of which should be taken for granted. Experts call this field “food security,” and the entire system is more fragile than it looks. World populations are climbing while water resources are dwindling, which has led countries such as Saudi Arabia and China to seek farmland on other continents. Among its myriad examples, “The Grab” focuses on a 15-square-mile expanse in La Paz, Ariz., an arid desert locale where there’s no limit to the amount of water landowners can pump from the aquifers. Arizona’s policy of unrestricted access means Saudi investors can legally tap into the water table to grow fields of hay, which will be shipped home to feed their cattle, even if it means draining the wells of local farmers in the process.

The oceans are already overfished, and soon there won’t be enough fish for the millions of spicy tuna rolls consumed each year in the U.S. But thankfully for sushi-mad Angelenos, chef Colin Whitbread has found a different and more sustainable direction with his new restaurant Fiish at Culver City’s Platform LA. The former professional surfer — who has been creating private dinners for the likes of the Jonas Brothers, Jason Derulo and Lil Nas X for a decade — calls his approach “guilt-free.” Fiish focuses on sustainable practices such as sourcing almost all the fish from the local waters of California and Baja California.

Anna Marie de la Fuente A survivor of the Baja California accident that claimed the lives of actors Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González from the Netflix series “The Chosen One” says he doesn’t blame the van driver or the production company. But actor Yeray Albelda says it’s the norm that “people are exhausted” in many productions.The Mexican actors union ANDA also held a remote press conference Tuesday to weigh in on the fatal crash.In an interview with Variety, Albelda, one of the six survivors of the crash, said he was told that a mechanical failure might have caused it. Others, he was told, have speculated that the driver was trying to avoid a pothole or even a deer.
