He added that these were “marvellous moments” that he would “never forget”. His Majesty’s comments were aired as part of a special BBC programme of tributes in which Queen Elizabeth’s children recalled the mother behind the formal persona, and how they learnt to share her with her nation.
They spoke of unwavering devotion to duty, how she was not just a “reference point of stability” for the British public, but also for the family.
They recalled how even in private she was “always the Queen”, but also of her sense of humour and mischief. They emphasised the importance of intimate family moments away from the public glare and the significance of holidays at Balmoral, Sandringham and on Britannia, the Royal Yacht.
