John Oliver kicked off Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight by addressing last week's Democratic National Convention —or, what many in the media took to calling "an unconventional convention" due to its virtual nature and lack of attendees amid the coronavirus pandemic. "That's one of those things that sounds like it has gravity but actually means next to nothing, like 'it is what it is' or 'Quibi exclusive,'" Oliver quipped.
He then noted that the DNC "spent the week steering hard toward middle of the road." While it included appearances by the likes of Democrats including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Stacey Abrams, "a lot of time was given to Republicans," including Meg Whitman, Colin Powell and John Kasich.
