Used as a forward air base for a short time – a bombing raid was launched from Jersey and Guernsey against Italian forces on June 11 1940 – the islands were officially demilitarised on June 15.
Some 25,000 children along with their schoolteachers and a group of men of men of military age were evacuated to the British mainland.
