I'm A Celeb's Gwrych Castle was safe haven for Jewish children fleeing Nazi regime

Cold, draughty and reputedly haunted, Gwrych Castle might seem a little uncomfortable to the stars of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here.

Yet it is positively luxurious compared with the creepy, run-down shell it was when Henry Glanz arrived there as a boy fleeing Nazi Germany at the start of the Second World War.

Then it had no running water, no beds or hammocks to sleep on, and no lights to chase away the spooky shadows. But to 15-year-old Henry and the rest of the 200 Jewish children who arrived there in 1939 it was a welcoming haven.

He and his friends loved to explore the network of underground tunnels. “Apparently, they were haunted,” says Henry, now 96.
