But in 2021, former GMP officer David Sutcliffe has swapped policing for politics - and is running for mayor. The ex-inspector left the force three years ago and makes no bones about the strained circumstances under which he left.

Mr Sutcliffe, 53, was investigated by GMP’s professional standards branch after a complaint of assault was made against him by a colleague.
