Houses ‘sink’ on Scots street forcing residents to scramble to safety as emergency services lock down road

Saltcoats, Ayrshire, this morning, with some residents claiming it was caused by old coal mines the properties are built upon.

One resident noticed cracks had appeared on their walls when they woke up in the middle of the night - and raised the alarm with neighbours.The staircase of their upstairs villa flat later collapsed, with the back of the property sinking, while the ceiling of their downstairs neighbour caved in.Emergency services arrived at the scene, in the seaside town's Sharphill Road, and ruled the properties were not safe.
