One traveller recalled a holiday where they'd tried to take pesto with them. They wrote: "I've been there. In the very early days of the ban on liquids, gels and pastes I had to stand there while the security people had a big conflab about whether my big jar of pesto was a paste. "I mean it's probably just Italian for paste", I said, "I'll leave it behind." "But they were too interested in knowing if it was banned themselves to let me leave.

In the end a supervisor was contacted who confirmed that pesto is a paste." It can definitely be tricky knowing what is classed as a liquid when flying.
