Drivers on the smart motorway are alerted by more than 200 digital screens to potential hazards including changes in the speed limit, lane closures and incidents.
However, technical faults are understood to have caused some screens between junctions 10 at the Croft interchange and junction 12 at the Eccles interchange, both eastbound to Manchester and westbound to Liverpool, to switch off.
