H&M U-turns over £1.99 return fee that affects all customers

H&M has backtracked on its decision to charge customers to return store items - but only in certain circumstances. Earlier this week, the high street retailer quietly updated its returns policy, stating that it would be imposing a £1.99 charge for every in-store and online return, with the cost taken from the final refund.But shoppers will still be able to take advantage of returns, but only those directly made in store.

Purchases returned to the H&M warehouse by post will still be subject to the fee - unless items are faulty or damaged. Members of H&M's loyalty program will be offered all returns for free with non-members encouraged to sign up to reap the benefits, the Mirror reports.

A spokesperson for H&M told the BBC that the policy's wording on its website was "inaccurate" and has since been amended.

Its returns page now reads: "For non-members, there is a £1.99 return fee per return parcel when returning online orders to our warehouse.
