Four former footballers with dementia have died within a week amid growing fears that heading the ball may cause brain damage.
John Talbut, an FA Cup winner with West Brom in 1968, died on Friday from complications caused by dementia, which he had battled for six years.
The 79-year-old’s family were at his bedside at a care home in Belgium where he settled after his playing days. Former Aston Villa midfielder Mike Tindall, 79, Ipswich and Republic of Ireland defender Tommy Carroll, 77, and ex-Crystal Palace forward Barry Pierce, 85, also died in the space of a week.
Centre-half Talbut won the Cup alongside England striker Jeff Astle, the first player to be diagnosed with brain damage blamed on heading the ball.
