F1 contracts have come a long way since the days of Sir Stirling Moss. The iconic figure, widely considered the greatest driver never to have been crowned world champion, famously used to seal contractual deals with a handshake, away from the eyes of agents or hot-shot lawyers.Prior to his death in April last year at the age of 90, Moss had long vociferously opposed the money made by modern day drivers.
He claimed that in his prime, he would make the same as top barrister or a skilled surgeon, which was sufficient for doing what he loved.Moss is no doubt turning in his grave at what the likes of Sir Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen rake in nowadays, amounts that those who can expertly exploit a legal loophole, or utilise a scalpel, can only dream of.Here are six deals that prove being a world-class F1 driver is a pretty lucrative gig - for those who can get it.Might as well start with what's topical.Lando Norris is one of the hottest prospects in F1, so him signing a long-term deal at McLaren this week not only represented a major coup for the team, but a show of faith from the 22-year-old himself.Of course, four podium finishes and an eventual sixth place in the standings may seem a somewhat modest platform from which to launch a tilt at world domination, but the new technical regulations are likely to make Norris and co much stronger challengers this time around. But whilst the soundbites coming from Norris embrace that notion, let's not overlook the fact that committing his future until 2025 hasn't come without financial reward. His new deal is reportedly worth up to £80million, an average of £20million per season. So even if the young star's perceived show of faith isn't rewarded with an F1 crown, at least he won't be.
