Emma Thompson has backed a new campaign fund for women candidates aimed at shaking up British politics. The Hollywood actress stumped up £50,000 for Activate Collective, which is backing 11 women from underrepresented groups in local and mayoral elections across England next year.
The new cross-party slate includes eight women of colour, one disabled woman and a care leaver, with seven of the list identifying as working class.
Inspired by success of US groups such as Brand New Congress, which helped elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Emily’s List, which backs pro-choice Democratic female candidates, the fund aims to remove financial barriers to standing for elected office.
