Non-essential shops and businesses will close from tomorrow as new lockdown restrictions take effect in England. Pubs, restaurants, clothing stores and entertainment venues will shut their doors as emergency measures to combat rising coronavirus cases come into force.

It means thousands more workers will be placed on furlough as employers close their doors for the next four weeks. For others, it could be longer if tier three restrictions continue over Christmas and into the New Year. "Christmas is going to be different this year, perhaps very different, but it's my sincere hope and belief that by taking tough action now we can allow families across the country to be together," the Prime Minister said.
