A 40-year-old dad took his own life a month after his benefits were stopped. Lee Tarpey's devastated wife says her husband "should still be here" after his medication overdose death followed a stressful battle with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

He had told his wife Kerrie Tarpey he felt he was a drain on her and could not provide for his family amid his problems with the DWP.

Mr Tarpey, from St Helens in Merseyside, had been a builder for many years but had a heart attack in 2015 which saw him fitted with three stents.

He also suffered with angina and diabetes. Kerrie told the Liverpool Echo her husband had tried to return to work several times but was physically unable to and so applied for support from the government.
