Nicola Sturgeon will hold a coronavirus update on the state of the pandemic in Scotland later today. The First Minister is expected to announce tougher restrictions to deal with the rise in cases of the Omicron variant which first originated in southern Africa.
Opposition leaders at Holyrood have been told the latest strain of the virus is set to become the dominant within a number of days.In a statement earlier this week, Sturgeon reported a tenfold increase in Omicron.
It comes after Public Health Scotland urged the public to cancel their Christmas parties this year due to fears over Omicron.
