An heavy cough can spread droplets up to 12 feet, a scary video from a science experiment conducted during the coronavirus pandemic has shown.

Mixing together water and glycerin, scientists from Florida Atlantic University were able to make an artificial cough which was propelled using a jet to demonstrate a "light" cough and "heavy" cough.

The smaller, lighter droplets can stay in the air for more than a minute before settling and a "heavy" cough can travel up to 12 feet – double the social distancing recommendations laid out by the government.

In a clip, the artificial cough cloud is lit up by green LEDs and lasers to show clearly how the droplets behave in still air.
