The New York Times, did some digging and found out that all of this may have originated in Turkey. “#ChallengeAccepted was making zero sense to me and I wasn’t buying that it was just for vanity’s sake,” she tweeted. “Talked to some women in Turkey this AM who say it started there as a response to them being frustrated over always seeing black and white photos of women who have been killed.” It seems, though, that this specific purpose has been lost as the trend spread worldwide—which is what many people are criticizing about it.
