Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby is the highest profile event in the Stewartry to fall victim to the coronavirus so far.Thousands of people lined King Street for the inaugural derby last year.

However, organisers have decided to pull the plug on this year’s race – scheduled for July 12 – due to the pandemic.Organiser, Matt Mckerlie, said: “We were due to pay the deposit for the equipment this week and it’s quite a lot of money.

It’s not our money either, it’s what was left from last year and fundraising, so the team took the decision to postpone. Hopefully we’ll be back bigger and better in 2021.“It’s not ideal but people’s health has to come first and we didn’t want to risk it.
