Catholics.Call It Out vowed to take its complaint to the Scottish Government if East Dunbartonshire Council refuses to remove “Taig” from the names in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow.The Oxford Dictionary lists the word as a “derogatory term for a Catholic or Irish nationalist”.But officials say Taig Road in Waterside was named after Councillor Nathaniel Taig in 1946 and is not an insult.
Neighbouring Taig Gardens was built in the early 2000s.Jeanette Findlay, of Call It Out, set up in 2018 to give a voice to Scotland’s Catholic and Irish community, said: “Regardless of the reason for the name 80 years ago, it is astonishing that, as recently as the 2000s, a local authority and a developer would allow a known racial slur against the Irish.
